Turns out those half-empty water bottles you’re pouring into the potting mix might be doing more harm than good! It seems harmless, but watering too frequently without letting the soil partially dry can actually cause your plant to be overwatered. This leads to things like root rot, which left untreated, will kill your plant. The good news is, there’s an easy fix! Before watering, check the moisture level of the potting mix. I usually stick my hands straight in and feel around, but you can also use a moisture meter. Most houseplants prefer their soil to dry ¼ to ½ of the way down the planter between waterings. Once the plant is ready to be watered, make sure to fully saturate the soil (with Plant Food of course)! Plant Food is a fertilizer with all the nutrients your plant needs to grow happy and healthy, and can easily be used every time you water. Warning: Happy Monstera are good growers and will grow to take over your house and your heart. So just know if you follow these tips you might need to move rooms, clear furniture, and invest in a large planter if things go well. Fingers crossed they do! There are lots of opinions on this, but I pretty much NEVER repot a plant immediately after bringing it home! I mean, I feel like we need to get to know each other a little better first before I start messing with its undercarriage. Do I check it out? Of course, if there is anything alarming I will deal with it. But just a plant that looks good? It’s fine!! If it does need to be repotted, I try to give it at least a few weeks to acclimate to my home’s environment before I disturb its root system. SALON RESCUE FIDDLE UPDATE!! 2 years ago you came with me as we kidnapped this fiddle from a local salon and gave it the comeback of the century. Well now she’s back at the Merc to stay (yay) but sadly not looking her best. There are a few big leaves growing, but I just know we can do better. You know what that means...it’s time to chop! Does your Fiddle Leaf Fig look a little dry and crispy?! This tree sure does! See those leaves with light brown crispy patches? They are sunburnt. It’s not super common for an indoor fiddle to burn, but it still can happen. (Mine is like this because it was growing shoved up against a skylight in my office!) Chances are low that you’ll sunburn a plant inside your house, but very high if you move your plant outside for the summer. So, what do you do?! Sadly, once a leaf is damaged there is no reversing it. The good news is the roots of the tree are likely still in good shape. So even though you have some damaged leaves, your tree can still thrive. Just make sure to move your plant away from those direct sun rays that are causing the damage. What other weird things are you noticing with your Fiddle Leaf Fig? How can I help?
